Winthrop - Richard N. Sawyer, 68, passed away on September 5, 2010 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta, following a long illness. Richard was born on September 3, 1942 in Medford MA., the son of Richard and Barbara Sawyer. He attended schools in Gardiner and graduated from Gardiner High School in 1960, and after graduating, he completed his military obligation in Headquarters Company of the Maine Army National Guard. He was subsequently employed in several accounting and administrative positions in both the Executive and Legislative Branches of the Maine State Government. In 1995, he retired from his position as Director of Administrative Services for the office of the Executive Director of the Maine Legislature. In retirement, he spent much of his leisure time traveling, playing golf and spending time with family. He especially enjoyed the time with his grandsons. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 334, Augusta. Richard was predeceased by his parents and a brother Michael Sawyer. He is survived by his life partner Jacqueline Calcagni of Winthrop; daughters Kelly Sawyer of Augusta and Rebecca Kennedy and her husband Chris of Cumberland; grandsons Benjamin and Matthew, Jackie?s son Tony Calcagni and his wife Alison Samitt, and their sons Paul and Bennet; sister Barbara Wells and her husband Ray of West Gardiner; brother Paul Sawyer and his wife Kim of Augusta; brother Tom Sawyer and his wife Kathy of Topsham; sister Deborah Caron and her husband Richard of Augusta; sister Mary Sawyer of Windsor and brother Jim Sawyer and his wife Joyce of Gardiner; also several nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, September 9, at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery, Augusta. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to the Harold Alfond Cancer Center, Office of Philanthropy, P.O. Box 828, Waterville ME. 04903 or St. Michael School, 56 Sewall St., Augusta ME. 04330. The family would like to thank the doctors and the staff at the Alfond Cancer Center and the Oncology Unit and MaineGeneral Medical Center for their support and care.
