Robert
Ballard
Dec 26, 1916 — Feb 4, 2005
HALLOWELL - Robert Wing Ballard, 88, of Hallowell died on Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at his home. He was born on Dec. 26, 1916, in the same house he resided in for 88 years. He was born to George Irving and Alice (Wing) Ballard. He graduated from Hallowell High School in 1935. He married Helen Scott on August 6, 1939, and they were married for 59 years until Helen's death in 1999. Bob was a lifelong resident of Hallowell. For nearly 60 years, he and his younger brother, Richard, bought and sold beef and dairy cattle. He was a well-known cattle dealer and farmer who worked all over the state of Maine. Bob kept cattle on his property as recently as the summer of 2004. Bob loved to attend all Maine fairs, and one of his favorite pastimes was comparing livestock at fairs and auctions. As recently as the summer of 2004, he attended six fairs in Maine. He was quoted in the Kennebec Journal in an article written about him in November 1999, 'I've had a good life. Cattle dealing was very exciting, if I hadn't liked it, I wouldn't have done it so long.' Another quote from that article stated, 'Everyone knows him, and he knows everyone; farmers in Bangor, Unity, Waldoboro, Belgrade, Rockland and Farmington -- from all over the state. He's good natured, honest and has a great sense of humor, and people have always appreciated that.' Bob was a 50-year member of the Kennebec Lodge of Masons 5 in Hallowell and a lifelong member of the Windsor Fair Association. He also is a descendant of Martha Ballard, a famous midwife in the late 1700s whose diary was famously published in the 1990s; his father, George, was a direct descendant. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen (Scott) Ballard, who died on March 27, 1999; a great-granddaughter, Vanessa Ann Buck, on Sept. 11, 1993; and two brothers, Richard and Milton Ballard. He is survived by two daughters, Jean Ballard and Alice Buck and her husband, Charles 'Hap'; two sons, Scott and David Ballard, both of Hallowell; one sister, Clara Mandell of Windham; two sisters-in-law, Charlena Ballard and Lottie Ballard, both of Hallowell; and eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends may visit at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, Monday from 9 to 11 a.m., with funeral services at 11 a.m. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. http://www.khrfuneralhomes. com In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Windsor Fair, c/o Jim Tracy, 230 Park St., Farmingdale 04344. These donations will be used to present an award to a child involved with cattle in 4-H at the Windsor Fair.
