AUGUSTA - Robert E. Carl, 72, of Augusta and Winthrop, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, at Maine Medical Center in Portland. He was born in Augusta on July 18, 1935, the son of Rodney and Rena (Stevens) Carl. He grew up in Mount Vernon and was a graduate of Winthrop High School. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. After the war he married Lucy Pinkham and together they raised their six children. He worked for a time in construction as an equipment operator and later as a truck driver for St. Johnsbury. Robert enjoyed hunting and taught his children to hunt with him. He also enjoyed watching his boys play football and in his later years enjoyed beano and going to Foxwoods. Mr. Carl was predeceased by his wife, Lucy Carl, and his son, Rodney Carl. He is survived by his sons, Russell Carl of Augusta, Robert Carl and his wife, Lisa, of Watertown, N.Y., and Randall Carl of China; his daughters, Rhonda Cartlidge of China and Gayle Stratton and her husband, Hal, of Belgrade; his sister, Jane Bickford of Belgrade; his grandchildren, Brandon and Brooke Cartlidge, Curt Morse, Hal, Desiree, and Danielle Stratton, J.D. Smith, Nicholas, Caitlyn, and Ross Carl and Hunter, along with one great-grandson, Harley Stratton. Relatives and friends may visit 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop.
