Obituary

BELGRADE - Robert Lewis Cook, 60, of Belgrade passed away at home with his family by his side on Thursday, July 17, 2008, after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer. He was born in Lewiston on Sept. 14, 1947, the last child of Carlton L. and Elizabeth A. (Smith) Cook. Bob graduated from Winthrop High School, class of 1965. He also attended Central Maine Vocational School in Auburn, majoring in drafting. From school, he served in the Navy aboard the USS Richard L. Page, a guided missile frigate. Upon returning home, he worked for the Wiesendanger Company in Winthrop, until he was hired by the Augusta Sanitary District, where he worked for almost 37 years in the maintenance department. He was the supervisor for several years. He took early retirement in 2006, just prior to becoming ill. Bob married his longtime friend and soul mate, Cheryl, on May 15, 2004, on Vinalhaven. Bob was an avid fisherman and hunter. He very much enjoyed spending time at his camp on Hales Pond in Fayette, which he built in the 1970s. Bob was also an excellent photographer and he took great pride in his work. Mr. Cook is survived by his wife of four years, Cheryl, of Belgrade; his loving daughter, Jessica McDuffie and her husband, Darrell, of Dunn, N.C.; his grandchildren, whom he loved so much, Mikayla, Hayley, Dearlquise and Kiana; his brothers, Henry Cook and his wife, Mary Alice, of Wayne, and Floyd Cook and his companion, Shelly Given, of New Portland; his sisters, Esther Lewia, of Winthrop, and Dorothy Campbell and her companion, Harold Wood, of Manchester; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Tolman, of Vinalhaven; sister and brother-in-law Mary and Phil Welts and their sons and their spouses, Keagan Welts, of Penobscot, and Paul Forti, of Farmington, N.Y.; his uncle, Ezra Smith and his companion, Irma Rice, of Winthrop; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins who were very special to him; and last but not least, his cat, Boomer, who was by his side all the time he was sick. A memorial celebration of Bob's life will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Wayne Community Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Cat Hospital, P.O. Box 480, Manchester, ME 04351.
