Obituary

AUGUSTA - Robert J. Hillier, 92, of Augusta died Thursday, March 12, 2009, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. He was born in Augusta on Jan. 10, 1917, the son of Wilfred and Harriett (Brown) Hillier. Robert grew up in Augusta and attended Augusta schools. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a staff sergeant in the 388th Military Police Battalion in Germany. After the war, he became a machinist and worked for many years for the United Shoe Machinery Company. Mr. Hillier and his wife, Florence (Lyon) Hillier, were married for 72 years. They owned and operated the Dairy Bar on Bangor Street for many years. Bob enjoyed sports, especially golf. He was also a bowler and enjoyed throwing horseshoes and was an avid Red Sox fan. Bob was predeceased by two brothers, William and Lewis Hillier; and a sister, Harriet Bryne. He is survived by his wife, Florence; his daughter, Hope Michael, of Mount Airy, Md.; his brother, Gordon Hillier and his wife, Barbara, of Readfield; his brother-in-law, Herbert H. Bryne Jr.; his grandchildren, Melinda Hannah, Tammy Irwin and Pamm Shankman; along with 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. Relatives and friends may visit from 1 p.m. until service time.
