Obituary

TOGUS - Robert Frederick Richardson, 74, died at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Togus on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010. He was born in San Diego on July 3, 1936, the son of Charles Leonard and Catherine (McTeigue) Richardson. Not long after graduating from high school, Robert served as an airplane mechanic in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. Robert's love of his Air Force roots continued long after his honorable discharge from the service, which was apparent from the numerous Air Force airplane models he built and collected, and the Air Force insignia displayed on almost every article of clothing he would wear. He also took a big interest in photography. Robert worked various jobs throughout his life, including a brief employment with Bath Iron Works, from which he retired. Robert is survived by his two previous wives, Patricia and Sandra Richardson; and three sons, Robert F. Richardson of Rochester, N.Y., David J. Richardson of Smithville, N.J., and Scott Richardson of South Carolina. A committal service with full military honors will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 20, in the chapel at the new Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta.
