HALLOWELL - Robert Myrick Shepherd Sr., 89, passed away on Oct. 5, 2005, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta, after a brief illness. Bob was born in Hallowell on Sept. 19, 1916. He was the son of Clarence and Clara Evelyn (Weeks) Shepherd. He graduated from Hallowell High School in 1935, president of his class. He was involved in trucking and construction for most of his life. Along with his brother, Cedric, he was the owner of Shepherd Brothers Inc. of Hallowell, which he operated for many years until his retirement in 1983. Mr. Shepherd was a lifelong resident of Hallowell and was very active in the community. He served as city councilor and as mayor, and was honored as Hallowell's citizen of the year in 2001. His company built the present Little League field and sponsored a team for 15 years. He was a member of the board of directors of the Associated General Contractors of Maine for many years. He was a lifetime member of the Kennebec River Power Squadron and was an instructor of many boating courses for that organization. He was a leader in the Hallowell Fish & Game Association for many years. He transported Hallowell students to school and many local teens to bean-picking with his school bus. His greatest passion was boating. He could be seen regularly aboard his houseboat, which he kept at Boothbay Harbor for more than 30 years. He was a member of Kennebec Lodge 5 Masons and Kora Temple Shrine. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Cedric L. Shepherd; sister Harriette Shepherd Freeman; and best friend Bob Ballard. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary (Fuller) Shepherd; daughters Gretchen L. Shepherd and her husband, Jim Lawler, of Hallowell, and Holly Ann and her husband, Gregory Lanza, of St. Louis; sons Robert M. Shepherd Jr. and his wife, Carol, of Richboro, Pa., David M. Shepherd and his wife, Carolee, of Hallowell, and Eric C. Shepherd and his wife, Susan, of Farmingdale; and a sister, Lorraine Shepherd (Prime) Stiles, of Farmington. Also surviving are grandchildren Scott Holbrook, Todd Holbrook, Kirk Holbrook, Robin Shepherd, Robert M. Shepherd III, Michael Shepherd, Sam Shepherd, Devin Shepherd, Bradley Shepherd and Eva Shepherd; and great-grandchildren Sophie Holbrook, Tessa Holbrook, Danielle Holbrook and Forest Holbrook. Also surviving are nieces Linda Shepherd Gilson and husband Jim, Meredith Prime Ranger and husband Gene, Suzel Prime Listewnik and husband Rob, and Karen Prime Shaner; a nephew, Stephen S. Shepherd and wife Kathryn; several cousins, including Roger Lord of Hallowell; and countless good friends and neighbors. A celebration of Bob's life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St Matthew's Episcopal Church, 20 Union St., Hallowell, with the Rev. Calvin Sanborn officiating. Burial will follow in Hallowell Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hubbard Free Library, 115 Second St., Hallowell 04347. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1 Church St., Augusta.
