AUGUSTA - Ruth Mowry Stone, 87, of Augusta died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at the Augusta Rehabilitation Center. She was born Oct. 19, 1916, in Brighton, Mass., the daughter of George and Sarah (Pettit) Rose. Ruth was a 1937 graduate of Burdett College in Boston. She went on to work as an executive secretary in the governor's office and later at Payne and Cross. She worked at Central Maine Power Co. for 18 years, retiring in 1971. Mrs. Stone was a member of the Augusta Duplicate Bridge Club, St. Barnabas Episcopal Church and the Multiple Sclerosis Society, and was a volunteer at AMHI for 12 years. She was named Volunteer of the Year in both 1973 and 1978. Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Stone. She is survived by a son, David P. Hughes, of San Angelo, Texas; a daughter, Ruth Hughes Randle of Manassas, Va.; a stepson, Mark Kenneth Stone of Waltham, Mass.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends may visit 2-4 p.m. on Tuesday at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Augusta. At the conclusion of the service, everyone is invited to attend a time of sharing and fellowship in the church hall. Burial will be at the Southside Cemetery in Skowhegan, in the spring.
