EAST WINTHROP - June S. Turgeon, 84, died Tuesday, June 21, 2005, at Winthrop Manor. She was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, on June 2, 1921, the daughter of Dougald Edwin and M. Maude (Stephens) McCatherin. At age 2, June moved with her family from Canada to Portland, and it was there that she received her education. She graduated from Lincoln Junior High and Deering High School and attended Northeastern Business College in Portland. After graduation, she became the female vocalist with the many dance bands in the Portland area and appeared in most of the dance pavilions operating at that time. She also performed at college proms, home and auto shows, and on WCSH radio in Portland. June married Raymond Turgeon on Oct. 6, 1940, and they lived in Westbrook, where their first two children were born. June and the children, Carleton and Joyce, remained there while Ray served in the Army in Europe during World War II. The family moved to East Winthrop in 1950, where the three youngest children were born, and has remained there since. All five children graduated from Winthrop High School and attended the University of Maine. June continued her interest in music and singing with East Winthrop Baptist Church, the CODA Chorus, the Bank of Maine Singers and the East Winthrop Bell Ringers. When the children were older, she went to work for the state Bureau of Taxation and later the fish and wildlife department. June was preceded in death by her oldest son, Carleton Brian 'Smiley' Turgeon, on Feb. 25, 1995; and also by four brothers and four sisters, Stuart, Charles, Harry and John 'Jack' McCatherin and Helen McCatherin, Jean Weller, Adelaide Morgan and Marion Walton. She is survived by her husband, Raymond; two sons, Paul Turgeon and his wife, Kristin, of Atlanta, and Thomas Turgeon and his wife, Melissa, also of Atlanta; two daughters, Joyce Turgeon of Groton, Conn., and Patti Sapp and her husband, John, of Mahomet, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the new Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
