WINTHROP - On Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, Stephen Gould passed away peacefully at home on a snowy Maine morning. He was surrounded by his family. He was born July 3, 1949, in Caribou. Stephen was predeceased by his parents, Jerrard and Alletta Gould of Caribou. The family left Maine after selling their potato farm in the early 1950s. He grew up in Seymour, Conn., and apprenticed at Pratt & Whitney in machining. He returned to Maine in 1970, where he met his wife, Sally Pond Gould. They settled in the town of Winthrop, where they raised their family. Stephen had been living with a diagnosis of ALS for two years. People who have ALS have a need for special equipment that is not covered by insurance. Therefore, a fund has been set up at Winthrop Area Federal Credit Union to receive donations to purchase such equipment for other patients with this disease. Stephen had been employed by General Electric of Auburn for 22 years. His co-workers remained in touch with him throughout his disease, and there are not enough words that can express the wonderful support they gave him. Stephen was a man of many trades. He was a machinist and held his journeyman in carpentry, as well as millwrighting. Stephen enjoyed the quiet life of a Maine man. He enjoyed classic cars and teaching his children to hunt and fish and to respect all people and the environment. He was a man who believed you should always leave a place cleaner than when you found it, return a borrowed item in better condition than received, and always leave people smiling. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his quirky pranks and for being taken away too soon. Finally, in the words of his granddaughter, 'he will have the best view of the big game.' Stephen is survived by his wife of 33 years, Sally Gould, their daughters and their families: Angela and Jonathan Valvano of Gloucester, Mass., and their three children, Hannah, Margaret, and Grace; Kim and Joel Stoneton of Winthrop and their two children, Kelsey and Haley; and Sarah Gould and her fiance, Michael Hebert, of North Carolina. He also is survived by his sister, Carolyn Green, of Charlotte, Vt.; his brother, Dana Gould, of Smithfield, R.I.; and his sister, Sylvia Llewellyn, of Southbury, Conn. He was a beloved son-in-law to Charlie and Ann Pond of Winthrop. Steve also is survived by a large extended family, too many too mention but not too many to remember. He will be missed by family and many friends. Relatives and friends may visit Monday at the home of Stephen and Sally Gould, 46 Hanson St., Winthrop, from 1 to 7 p.m.. A memorial celebration of Stephen's life will be held Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Winthrop. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to be made to the Stephen Gould Memorial Fund, Winthrop Area Federal Credit Union, 94 Highland Avenue, Winthrop 04364.
