WINTHROP - Susan Harger Stanley went to meet her maker on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010. She was the daughter of Dr. Rolla Neil Harger and Helen Harger of Indianapolis. Susan was born on April 11, 1927, and was the youngest of three children. She was raised in Indianapolis, and graduated from Shortridge High School in 1944. Susan went on to graduate from Purdue University in 1948, where she met her future husband Carl Richard (Dick) Stanley. They worked on the Purdue yearbook together, and attended several social functions with Susan's sorority (Chi Omega) and Dick's fraternity (Beta Theta Pi). They were married on a rainy day on June 3, 1950 that brought them a lifetime of happiness together. Susan raised three children, and lived in Neenah, Wis., Denver, Detroit, Ramsey, N.J., Pelham, N.Y., and Old Greenwich, Conn., when Dick was transferred by his company. She and Dick moved to Maine in 2007. In addition to being a loving wife and mother, Susan enjoyed adventure and she and Dick traveled all over the world together, including Australia, China, Russia, South America and several countries in Europe. She also volunteered her time with several charitable organizations such as the Red Cross and PEO. Susan is survived by her husband, Dick Stanley of Winthrop; her three children, Laura Stanley and her husband, Geoff Preece, of Tascott Australia, Paul Stanley and his wife, Julie, of Manchester, and Jim Stanley and his wife, Mary, of Austin, Texas; and her six grandchildren. Memorial services for Susan will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21, at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. She will be laid to rest at the First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich, Conn., at a later date. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.khrfuneral homes.com
