Wanda
Horzempa
d. Oct 20, 2010
WINTHROP - Wanda Motyl Horzempa, 90, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010, at Lawrence General Hospital in Lawrence, Mass. She was born in Lewiston on Sept. 28, 1920, the daughter of Michael and Sophie Motyl. Wanda grew up in Auburn and graduated from Auburn High School. She worked briefly at the Bates Mill in Lewiston before being employed by AT&T as a telephone operator in Auburn. She was married to Lewis Joseph Horzempa (deceased) of Winthrop in 1948 and lived in Beverly, Mass., for most of her adult life. She worked for AT&T in Massachusetts for 15 years, while raising a family of three children. In 1991 she and her husband retired back to Winthrop, which they always regarded as home. For the past six years, she lived in Exeter, N.H., with her daughter, Tris, before moving into assisted living in Massachusetts in 2009. However, she continued to visit Winthrop and never ceased to light up at the sight of the countryside there. Wanda was a woman with a strong sense of family. She had a love of art and was a self-taught painter with a true special talent. She painted many seascapes during the time she lived by the coast in Beverly, Mass. She also loved the hills and lakes of Winthrop and painted many landscapes capturing the beauty of the area. Wanda is survived by her daughter, Tris A. Motyl of Georgetown, Mass.; her two sons, Lewis M. Horzempa and his wife, Mary Lou, of Georgetown, and William M. Horzempa and his wife, Mary, and daughter, Rachel, of Beverly. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church in Winthrop. Burial will follow immediately at Glenside Cemetery, Turkey Lane in Winthrop.
