AUGUSTA - William David Hayes Sr., 65, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2007, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care, Gray Birch Drive, Augusta. \r\r\n\r\r\nHe was born in Augusta on May 21, 1942, the son of Maurice L. and Alice D. (Carrier) Hayes. \r\r\n\r\r\nHe graduated from Hallowell High School in 1960 and served in the U.S. Army with a Missile Battery stationed in Germany. \r\r\n\r\r\nAfter his military service, William returned home to work with his parents in the family business, Hayes Bakery, in Hallowell. In 1973 he became the owner and ran the business for a few more years. He later worked as a representative for the State of Maine Lottery Commission, retiring in 1998. \r\r\n\r\r\nHe married Karen Mathews and they raised two sons, Matthew and William. William was active in sports. He was a champion candlepin bowler, avid racquetball player, and enjoyed playing softball, pool, ping pong and games of all kinds. \r\r\n\r\r\nA hobby of his was woodworking, especially making coatracks that he would sell or give to friends. \r\r\n\r\r\nHe was a past member of the Augusta Elks Lodge #964. \r\r\n\r\r\nHe was predeceased by his parents. William is survived by his sons William David Hayes Jr. of Augusta and Matthew Hayes and his wife, Beth Williams, of New York; two brothers, Dana Hayes and his wife, Linda, of Benton; Richard Hayes and his wife, Jean, of Hallowell; a special friend Wanita Meager of Freeport; also several nieces and nephews. \r\r\n\r\r\nVisiting will be held Monday, Nov. 19, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at Sacred Heart Church, Hallowell with Rev. George Hickey, Celebrant. \r\r\n\r\r\nBurial will follow in the Hallowell Cemetery, Hallowell.
