FARMINGDALE—William R. Markham, Sr. 90, of Farmingdale, died Saturday April 20, 2013 at the Maine Veterans Home. He was born in Chelsea, December 2, 1922 the son of Ray and Ina (Adams) Markham. He attended Chelsea Schools. William entered the Maine National Guard in 1939 and was called to active duty in 1942. He served in the South Pacific including on Guadalcanal, The Solomon Islands, New Guinea, and Saipan. He earned the Combat Infantrymans Badge and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was discharged as a Tech 5. After the war, Bill worked at Hallowell Shoe and Richmond Shoe. He was self-employed for several years and worked with his son, Gary, sawing logs until he was 82. Mr. Markham was predeceased by his wife, of 54 years, Betty (King) Markham; his son, William R. Markham, Jr.; his brothers, Norman, Raymond, Ernest, Richard, Merle, Harold, and Rodney, and his sisters, Phyllis, Marion, and Ina Mae. He is survived by his children, Gary J. Markham and his wife, Cindy, of Farmingdale and Timothy Markham and his wife, Margaret Hsieh, of Pittsburgh, PA; his daughter, Ruth Tweedie and her husband, Robert, of Farmingdale; his grandchildren, Jon Markham and his wife, Kasey, of Augusta, Emily Markham, of Washington, D.C., Jessica Dehetre, of Gardiner and Dylan Dehetre, of Farmingdale and his sister, Cora Pushard. A graveside celebration of life will be held at the Carter Cemetery, Litchfield Road in Farmingdale, Wednesday April 24, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Service, One Church Street, Augusta.
