WINTHROP - Alan R. Butler, 63, took his last breath surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at MaineGeneral Medical Center after his courageous battle with leukemia. He was born in Augusta on Nov. 27, 1946, to Robert and Alfreda (Jacques) Butler. After graduating from Cony High School, class of 1966, Alan enlisted in the Marines and was deployed to Vietnam where he served three tours of duty. When he returned home in 1968, he bought his first brand new car -- a Chevy Camaro. This started Alan's love affair for vehicles. From July of 1970 to March of 1972 he worked as a patrolman for the Winthrop Police Department. From September of 1972 to November of 1989 he worked for the Augusta Police Department where he retired as sergeant. In September of 1991, Alan was called back into law enforcement with the Kennebec County Sheriff's Department as court security for the Superior Court in Augusta. At this time, he also worked as needed for the Monmouth Police Department. In June of 2009, Alan officially retired. In April of 2010, he bought his second Camaro -- this one he custom made. In May of 1972, Alan married the love of his life, Nancy Philippon of Winthrop. They had two daughters and five granddaughters. Alan was a fun loving man who enjoyed the simple things in life. Cookouts with friends and family was his favorite past time. For the past 30-plus years he enjoyed Saturday morning breakfast with his two 'brothers' Raymond Philippon and Stan Booker. If he wasn't at home, he could be found at camp enjoying swinging outside listening to the radio or washing his truck. He had a great sense of humor, often telling jokes when and where he probably shouldn't have. He was always smiling and whistling -- especially early in the morning. He greeted each day with a song. Everyone who met Alan loved him and he will be dearly missed. Alan was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Alfreda Butler and his brother Ronald Butler. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Nancy Butler, who never left his side; two daughters, Melinda Whitcomb of Sidney and her husband John and their two daughters, Abigail and Olivia and Karen Beaudoin of Monmouth and her husband David and their daughters Averi, Reese and Addison; a sister, Jeanne Coffin of Standish and her husband Ron; two aunts; two sisters-in-law and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the caring staff of the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care who brightened his day while he was there and also to the nurses on the fourth floor at MaineGeneral Medical Center who took wonderful care of him. A gathering of relatives and friends will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Winthrop. Burial will follow at Glenside Cemetery, Turkey Lane, Winthrop.
