WINTHROP - Albert J. Belz, Jr "Al," 84, passed away on April 10, 2025, at The Hospice House in Auburn.
He was born on December 10, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York, to Albert Sr. and Lillian (Weill) Belz.
Al graduated from Winthrop High School, class of 1959. Shortly thereafter, he married his high school sweetheart, Ruth "Betty" Belz, his wife of 60 years. Al earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Maine at Orono. After graduating, he began his 34-year career at the Maine Department of Transportation, from which he happily retired in 2000.
Al was a longtime member of the Winthrop Lions Club. He enjoyed snowmobiling, ice fishing, and skiing. One of his favorite activities was golfing. He particularly enjoyed the "19th hole" with his friends to end their round. He and Betty spent many happy years vacationing, gathering, and eating out with family and friends. On Sunday morning, Al would be found with the KJ crossword in his hand. Al loved spending time with his grandchildren, attending their events, and supporting them in their accomplishments.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Betty, and his parents, Albert Sr. and Lillian.
Al is survived by his son Darryl and his wife Susan of Winthrop and their daughters, Brooke and Erica, brother Thomas and his wife Francine of Readfield, brother Dennis and his wife Linda of Colorado, and sister, Patricia and her husband Ernie Mayo of Hampden as well as many close friends.
The family would like to thank the incredible staff at The Hospice House for the wonderful care and compassion they have shown to Al and his family.
A time for visiting will be held on Thursday April 24th from 5-7PM at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. A private burial will take place at Glenside Cemetery on Turkey Lane in Winthrop.
