Obituary

WINTHROP – Alice M. (Fleury) Brooks, 85, of Winthrop, Maine and Spring Hill, Fla., passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026. Born on Sept. 26, 1940, Alice was the youngest of Henry and Bernadette Fleury's four daughters. She was raised in Winthrop and graduated from Winthrop High School in 1958. Following graduation, Alice worked for the State of Maine. It was there she met her husband, Terry Brooks. Alice and Terry married in 1965 and settled in Winthrop. Over the next 60 years, she and Terry raised two daughters, and later welcomed five grandchildren and one great grandson. Life took them for a short time to Hudson, NH, but ultimately home was Winthrop and they returned to raise their family. Alice was an avid- although frustrated-golfer. Whenever weather allowed, she and Terry could be seen on the courses in Augusta, at Springbrook or the courses at Timber Pines. Alice loved cards, often playing Canasta, Bridge, 63, and even Hearts. After she and Terry became snowbirds, she even joined a group playing Mahjong. She was a voracious reader. Alice loved high school basketball. She spent many years at the Winthrop High School gym rooting on the Ramblers, long after her own daughters had graduated. Every February, without fail, she and Terry could be found at the Augusta Civic Center for hours and days on end, watching the high school tournaments. Even after relocating to Forida for winters, the games were streaming on the television every winter. When home in Maine, she devotedly attended University of Maine Augusta and Southern Maine Community College games cheering on her granddaughter. Over the years, Alice and Terry traveled extensively in the U.S., Canada and Europe often with special friends Larry and Elaine Fitzgerald. Alice is survived by her loving husband of 60 years Terry; her daughters Karen Grasso and her husband Ernest, and Michele Butler and her husband James; grandchildren Christian (Natalie) Murphy, Joseph (Sofia) Grasso, Laura Grasso, Hope Butler, Daniel Butler; her great grandson Nicolas Grasso; sister Lorraine Fleury; nephew Paul (Cathy) Hebert; nieces Louise (Sal) DiMartino, Linda (Carl) Cooper, Joanne (Peter) Cummings; and her chosen family Elaine Fitzgerald. A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 30, 2026, at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, 20 Lake Street, Winthrop, ME In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to your hospice of choice.
