Obituary

WINTHROP, ME-Alison Leigh Hapworth Roberts, 90, of Winthrop died Friday, February 25, 2022, at her home, with family by her side. Alison was born in Waterville, ME, on October 4, 1931 the daughter of Fanny (Hustus) Hapworth and Howard C. Hapworth, weighing only 4 pounds and 4 ounces at birth and losing weight during her first few weeks. Following her 1949 graduation from Lawrence High School in Fairfield, ME, Alison worked as a switchboard operator for the New England Telephone Company in Waterville for eight years. In 1955, Alison met Dana L. Roberts. Their mothers had been best friends in high school and had maintained their friendship over the years through letters and occasional visits. Alison and Dana married on June 23, 1957. The young married couple first lived in Fairfield. In 1958, Alison became a full-time homemaker when they moved to Harmony, Maine. Within the space of 3 years and 2 months, Alison gave birth to the first three of her four children. In 1963, the family moved from Harmony to a small cabin at the base of Mt. Pisgah in Winthrop, ME when Dana took a position as a Maine Forest Service Firetower Watchman. The impending 1967 birth of their fourth child was the impetus for moving to a large house close to downtown Winthrop. The house became the home where Alison resided until her death. Married for nearly 65 years, Alison and her husband Dana L. Roberts had one daughter (Sarah) and three sons (Paul, Chase, and Don). Life lessons that Alison imparted to her children through her words and actions, included "be thankful for what you have," "don't cry over spilled milk (or popped balloons)," and goals can be reached by "putting one foot ahead of the other." Alison excelled at cleaning pounds and pounds of fiddleheads. She enjoyed canoeing, fishing, hiking, camping, and gardening. For decades, Alison, with her husband and children, raised a lot of vegetables with limited use of pesticides. Selling of some of the vegetables they raised at a roadside stand was the children's job for many years. Later, Alison ran the vegetable stand and became known locally as "the Tomato lady." Alison also worked as housekeeper for Winthrop area individuals and families. For several years, she raised and milked goats. For a short time, she worked at a chicken hatchery in Winthrop Center. From the mid-1980s to 1994, Alison woke up before dawn Monday through Saturday, poured herself a cup of tea and set out to deliver the Kennebec Journal newspaper to up to 200 Winthrop area subscribers. At the Winthrop United Methodist Church where she was a faithful member and attender, Alison regularly cleaned the "Wonder Awhile Nursery School." In the 1990s Alison needed a hip replacement as she was walking slower and slower, using two canes. The doctor asked Alison what kind of activities she engaged in. After she spoke of hiking and canoeing, the surgeon declared that he was going to give her a "sport hip" which allowed for canoeing. Soon after the hip replacement, Alison was walking with her oldest son. Unexpectedly a soccer ball rolled towards them. Without thinking about it, Alison expertly kicked the soccer back to the soccer players. Right up to the week before she passed away, Alison read magazines such as the Smithsonian, Birds & Blooms, and the National Geographic. She was strongly concerned about the steep decline in bee populations in recent decades in Maine, the country, and around the globe. Mourning Alison's loss are her husband Dana; her daughter Sarah; her sons Paul (and spouse Claire), Chase (and spouse Shirley), and Don (and spouse Tracy); and grandchildren (especially Bailey and Spencer). She was predeceased by her parents, and siblings (Kathleen and Ernest), as well as many other beloved relatives and close friends.
