Monmouth-Anita "Nita" M. Chandler, 74, passed away peacefully Sunday, November 19, 2023 at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta after a year-long battle with a rare aggressive pituitary sarcoma.
Nita was born on September 9, 1949 in Lewiston, Maine, the daughter of Bernard and Winifred (Russell) O'Connor.
She grew up in the Turner and Buckfield area and graduated from Leavitt High School in 1967. She worked several different jobs over the years including manufacturing, cashier, and office assistant. She retired a few years ago as an Office Manager of Commonwealth Financial Network in Monmouth.
Nita was known for her selflessness and was loved by many for her kind heart. She was a very creative person and enjoyed painting "on anything that isn't moving," reading sci-fi/fantasy books, making cross-stitch designs- even creating some of her own, and various other arts and crafts. She also loved music, roller skating, and dancing.
During the summer she would spend hours tending her flower gardens while watching the hummingbirds and butterflies. During the winter she would be outside snowshoeing, sledding or making snow forts, or inside reading or making something.
Nita is survived and will be deeply missed by her husband Greg Chandler, whom she married on May 15, 2004, even though they had been together since October 1978, and her two daughters and their families: Wendy Caron, her husband Scott, and their children Armand and Meridian of Marietta, GA and Lena Mason, her husband Kenneth, and their daughters Elizabeth and Ashley of Monmouth; her sisters Darcy Evans, Colleen O'Connor, and Melody Thurlow; as well as many extended family and friends. She was predeceased by both her parents, her older sister Shannon Atkinson and older brother Bernard O'Connor.
