Obituary

AUBURN - Anita Perkins Mortimer, 94, passed away in the comfort of her Auburn home on Shepley Street on Feb. 8, 2008. She was born on March 17, 1913, in Castine, the daughter of Fred C. and Hattie Belle Perkins. She attended the Eastern Maine Normal School in Castine, earning her teaching certification, and later received her undergraduate degree in education from the University of Maine system. A college basketball coach at Beal's Business School, and herself a basketball player at Eastern Maine Normal School, she enjoyed athletics and the life's lessons learned from participating in same. She taught school at the elementary level in the Auburn School System for 37 years, primarily at Webster and Chamberlain schools, earning the respect of both her peers and students alike. In addition to the satisfaction felt in teaching others, she took great pride in the character, educational and work accomplishments of her family. She continued to love spending summers at her family home in Castine late into life, as well as taking pride in her Shepley Street home surrounded by loving and caring neighbors. She was a very active, positive and appreciative person. Anita was predeceased by her parents Fred and Hattie Perkins of Castine, her husband Ralph Mortimer of Wakefield, Mass., her brothers Carlton Perkins of Hartford, Conn., Glenn Perkins of Proctor, Vt., and sisters Mary Emma Clark of Charleston S.C., and Doris Lovely of Scarborough. Her loves in life included her only child and son Bruce Mortimer of Winthrop; three grandchildren, Leah Huri and her husband Thomas of New Gloucester, Ian Mortimer and his fianc?e Libby Gillespie of New Gloucester and Jon Mortimer of Winthrop; her only great grandchild Olivia Gwen Huri of New Gloucester; also several nieces and nephews. There will be no visiting at this time and funeral services will be private. Burial will be in the Castine Cemetery in the spring.
