HALLOWELL ? Atwood Ora Smart, 89, of Hallowell, died Tuesday March 13, 2007 at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. He was born in Houlton December 15, 1917 the son of Ora and Minnie (Rogers) Smart. He grew up in Houlton and graduated from Houlton High School and the University of Maine, Orono. Mr. Smart served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He married June Lawrence in 1943 and after the war they moved from Maine to start Atwood?s career with Sears Roebuck and Company. He worked in many locations for Sears retiring in 1977 as a Zone Manager. After retiring from Sears, Mr. Smart worked as a consultant for Olympia Sports. He and his wife moved back to Maine in 1998. Atwood was an avid golfer, skier and photographer. He also enjoyed traveling with his family, visiting Alaska, Hawaii, Europe and many other places in his lifetime. Mr. Smart is survived by his wife, June; a son, Jack Atwood Smart and his wife, Kimberly, of Ballston Spa, NY; a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Vose and her husband, Edward, of Winthrop; a brother, Jack David Smart and his wife, Anita, of Readfield; three grandchildren, Kristen Elizabeth Grant, Coree Kimberly Paddock and Lindsay Robin Dewey and on great-grandson, Deacon Louis Paddock. A funeral service will be held at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin Street, Winthrop, Saturday at 2:00pm. Relatives and friends may visit at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the spring at the Evergreen Cemetery in Houlton. Memorial contributions may be made in Atwood?s name to the charity of one?s choice.
