AUGUSTA ? Barbara Ellen Crockett, 66, of Augusta died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation, Graybirch Drive in Augusta. She was born in Medford, Mass., Jan. 9, 1937, the daughter of Henry Brown 'Brownie' and Alice (Robinson) Crockett. Barbara attended school in Medford and graduated from Framingham Teachers' College. She later did course work at Simmons College in Boston, at the University of Maine's Portland and Augusta campuses, at Framingham State Teachers College and at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Miss Crockett taught home economics in Reading, Newburyport and Middleboro, Mass., and later in Sebago. She worked for the Maine Department of Education, School Nutrition Program as a consultant until her retirement in 1991. While working for the state, she was president of the Maine School Food Service Association for several years. After retiring, Barbara held several part-time jobs, including receptionist at the Augusta YMCA, clerk positions at Down East Candies and Harbor Village Wash and Dry, both in Boothbay Harbor. She also became active in the Maine Breast Cancer Coalition, of which she was vice president and chairwoman of the education committee and the support services committee. In 1999, Barbara drove alone in her pickup truck to Florida to see her brother-in-law, Dick Pond, and her sister Betty. Barbara is survived by her sister, Betty Pond of Ocala, Fla., and Ocean Point; a niece, Jeanne Streets of El Segundo, Calif.; a nephew, Mark Pond of Sterling, Va.; their families; and her cat, Puss. At her request, there will be a graveside service in the spring in Boothbay. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Cancer Research Foundation of America, 1600 Duke St., Alexandria, VA 22314 or Boothbay Region Humane Society, 27 Atlantic Highway, Edgecomb 04556.
