WASHINGTON, ME
Chief Petty Officer
Barbara E. Sager
U.S. Navy Retired
Was transferred to headquarters of Supreme Command of all Creation March 8, 2022.
I first saw Barb as she was reporting for duty at the Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland. I believe it was early January 1964. We were both reporting for duty at the Navy Dental Tech. School.
On our first free Saturday we went site seeing. We visited the White House, the Capital and had dinner at a nice restaurant.
I made a second date with her to see a movie, then went for pie and coffee. Afterward, I proposed marriage that evening. She accepted. We were married March 24, 1964. That began our 58-year adventure.
We began our life together in Washington, D.C. After 6 months, we transferred to Norfolk, Virginia for 3 years where we learned the lessons of long periods of separation.
We then transferred to San Diego, California where Barb was on the teaching staff of the Basic School for Dental Technician. We enjoyed southern California's beaches, the desert and Disneyland. But soon our three years were up, and we traveled East again.
This time we were sent to Newport, Rhode Island. Barb was so happy to be close to family in Andover, Massachusetts. Our joy was soon dampened by news that my ship's home port was changed to Naples, Italy. His could mean up to 2 years away from home. It turned out I only had to spend 7 months in Naples before I was able to return to Newport.
We spent the rest of our careers in Norfolk, Virginia. During that duty, we adopted a son 'Joe Diamond', another jewel in Barb's crown. I know she has been proud of Joe and his family. Joe has 3 sons: all very successful young men, and 5 grandchildren.
We moved from Norfolk, Virginia to Newport in 1977; then moved to Washington, Maine in 1992. We made many friends here and Barb has been a blessing to many. She volunteered 20 years at the Gibbs Library as well as the Church Sunshine Lady for many years; sending out get well, birthday, anniversary as well as encouragement cards all over the country on behalf of the Village Church.
If you would like to know the type of woman Barbara was, read Proverbs 31:10-31.
See you in Heaven,
Your husband of 58 years.
Ken
