Obituary

AUGUSTA ? Bertie B. Gilman, 85, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care, Graybirch Drive, Augusta. She was born in Shandaken, N.Y., Feb. 12, 1917, the daughter of Egbert and Estelle (Markle) Smith. She graduated from Cony High School in Augusta in 1935 and from Evangeline Booth Memorial Hospital in Boston as a certified obstetrical nurse in 1938. She also attended Maricopa Junior College in Phoenix, Ariz. Bertie was among the first to be a licensed practical nurse in the state of Massachusetts. She worked from 1940 to 1945 at Boston Lying In Hospital. She also worked private duty from 1945 to 1960 and retired from Good Samaritan Hospital of Phoenix in 1980 after 20 years of service. She was a member of the Booth Memorial Hospital Alumni Association. She attended church at Penney Memorial United Baptist Church in Augusta and the North Manchester Meeting House. She was predeceased by her first husband, Vincent Goodwin, in 1975; by Paul Gilman in 1995; and by two brothers and two sisters. Survivors include a son, Ronald V. Goodwin of Mesa, Ariz.; a sister Carrie Berry of Manchester; four brothers, Maine Smith of Seabrook, N.H., Lee Smith of New Sharon, Donald Smith of Manchester and Ernest Smith of South China; a close friend, Mary E. Goodwin of Phoenix, Ariz.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Visiting hours will be held from 1 p.m. until the 3 p.m. funeral, Monday, June 24, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, with the Rev. Stan Moody, pastor of the North Manchester Meeting House officiating. Burial will be at Green Acres Cemetery in Scottsdale, Ariz. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Penney Memorial Building Fund, 35 Grove St., Augusta ME 04330; or the North Manchester Meeting House, P.O. Box 240, Manchester ME 04351.
