Obituary

Beverly Jean Bump, a dedicated public servant, pioneering military nurse, and beloved family matriarch, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, in her apartment at The Philadelphian in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was 87 years old. Notably, Beverly held the distinction of being the longest-residing resident in the iconic building.

Born on April 4, 1939, in Blossburg, Pennsylvania, Beverly was a woman of sharp intellect, deep compassion, and a fierce drive to serve others. She excelled early in her education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from Temple University in 1976. However, her true calling lay in nursing. She graduated from the Robert Packer School of Nursing in Sayre, Pennsylvania, in 1960, and went on to pass her state board exams that winter, setting the stage for an extraordinary career spanning nearly five decades.

Beverly’s life was defined by her dual commitment to civilian medicine and military service. In September 1961, she joined the United States Air Force Nurse Corps as a Second Lieutenant. Her military career took her across the country and the world—from Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota and Shepard Air Force Base in Texas to Wheelus Air Force Base in Tripoli, Libya. As a flight nurse, she completed specialized training at the USAF Basic Orientation School at Gunter Air Force Base in Alabama and Flight Nursing School at Brooks Air Force Base in Texas. Her time abroad extended to working directly for the Libyan Government Central Hospital in Tripoli, where she served as a medical department supervisor, teaching American nursing methods and overseeing care for non-English-speaking patients.

Upon returning to the United States, Beverly brought her elite clinical expertise back to the East Coast. She worked in vital roles at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida, before permanently returning to her beloved Pennsylvania. For nearly a decade, she served as the Head Nurse and eventually the Assistant Director of Nursing at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. Her career also included deep contributions to the local healthcare infrastructure as a staff nurse at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and later within the critical care and PRN pools at Misericordia Hospital. Later in her career, she brought her talents to Presbyterian Hospital and Tastykake, while continuing her military dedication as an active member of the National Guard, culminating in her well-deserved retirement in 2010.

Beverly was highly respected by her peers, serving as the Chairman of the SPIN-Associate & Assistant Directors of Nursing society in 1976. She furthered her clinical education continuously, earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the University of Pennsylvania in 1979, a Master of Science in Health Service Management from LaSalle University in 1998, and maintaining advanced certifications in critical care and resuscitation well into her professional life.

To many she was known as Miss Bump, but to those who knew her best, she was affectionately known as "Aunt Bev." Beyond her impressive professional pedigree, Aunt Bev possessed an untamed, adventurous spirit and was truly up for anything. In the 1990s, she could be found climbing mountains in Maine alongside her brother Dennis, his wife Connie, and her nephews Tommy and Kurt. Following Connie’s passing Dennis married his wife Sandra and Bev seamlessly embraced her new extended family—enthusiastically jumping into whitewater rafting adventures with Laura and Charlie Seavey, and their daughter Amelia.

Aunt Bev became an absolute staple of the annual family trip to The Forks, Maine. Year after year, the Seaveys and Keschls would always find Bev right at the center of a captive audience. She was a master storyteller, holding court and sharing tales from her fascinating, globe-trotting life, while always listening just as attentively to the lives of those she loved. Her thirst for travel and connection never waned; she made several memorable trips to Cancun with her nephew Kevin and his daughter Cayenna, and she made it a strict point to connect every single holiday with her nephew CJ and his lovely family. Well known to residents of The Philadelphian for her many pool parties and willingness to help anyone, she also initiated a regular monthly meeting of a group of her friends known as the “Red Hats” all of who sported different “red” hats during their luncheons,

Beverly is survived by her loving brother, Dennis L Keschl, sister-in-law, Sandy J Keschl, her sister Joyce Brown, and a large, devoted circle of nieces and nephews who will forever cherish her legacy of bravery, curiosity, and deep familial love. She leaves behind a blueprint for a life fully and courageously lived.

A burial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2026. at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Belgrade, Maine.
