MOUNT VERNON - Bruce H. Hamill, 85, died on Friday, April 29, 2022, at his home in Mount Vernon.

He was born on August 23, 1936, in Lynn, Mass. the son of Richard Hubbard and Charlotte (Smith) Hamill.

He attended schools in exotic locations as his family moved in support of his father, Lt. Col. Richard H. Hamill, USAF. Returning to New England, Bruce achieved a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Writing from Colgate University in 1959. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.

After graduation, he served in the Navy as a Personnel man 3rd Class and then moved to Northern Virginia where he married Cornelia Witul in 1963. Earning his law degree at night school, Bruce passed the Bar in 1970 and started a career that earned accolades and the position of General Counsel for the National Paint and Coatings Association until his retirement.

He took up fiddle playing in his 40s, enjoyed bluegrass and antique violins. Bruce fixed old cars and frequently donned a leather jacket to ride a motorcycle to his job in DC. In 1997, he retired to Maine, which he considered his true home since his childhood time spent in Houlton, Bangor, Presque Isle, and Belgrade. He lived down the road from his mother, taking care of her until her death in 2004.

Bruce is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Walter Hamill and Wendy Townsend of Belgrade; a daughter, Cynthia Hamill of Arlington, Va.; a son, Richard Hamill of Topsham; a granddaughter, Avery Townsend of Belgrade; and a grandson, Alexander Hamill of Arlington, Va.

Bruce’s memorial service will be in the Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St. Augusta, Maine on Saturday, May 14, 2020 at 2:00 PM. His burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Belgrade, Maine.
