VASSALBORO -- Chantal Labbe, 80, passed peacefully away on Aug. 8, 2011, at Augusta Rehabilitation Center in Augusta. She was born Nov. 14, 1930, in St. Andre, New Brunswick, the second of 14 children of Charles and Marguerite (Cyr) St. Amand. She moved to Maine in 1952 to work at her uncle's store in Vassalboro, where she met her future husband, Richard F. Labbe, of Augusta. In October of 1957 they were married and moved to Augusta, where they raised their family. She was employed by Augusta General Hospital for over 30 years as a nurse's aide in the nursery, where she enjoyed taking care of the babies, and for 13 years as the bookkeeper for her husband's plumbing company. She graduated from Cony High School with a General Educational Development diploma in 1980. She was a member of Cushnoc Senior Citizen and the Le Club Calumet. Chantal's hobbies included gardening, quilting, knitting, and especially playing bingo. She loved to garden and enjoyed canning fruit and vegetables and making homemade jellies, jams, and pickles. She was predeceased by two brothers, Lionel St. Amand and Roger St. Amand; and one sister, Esperance Cochran. She is survived by her husband, Richard, of Farmingdale; her children, daughter Barbara Getty and her husband, Andrew, of Old Forge, N.Y., son Michael Labbe and his wife, Brandy, of Augusta, and son David Labbe and his wife, Clarissa, of Augusta; seven grandchildren, Andrew C. Getty, Jennifer Getty, Alexander Getty, Elizabeth Getty, Kaitlyn Labbe, Melissa Labbe and Stephen Labbe; six sisters, Renette Versaille and Gaitaine Ruest, both of Quebec, Mona Beaulieu of Ontario, Solange Dube, Mariette Oulette and Louise Caron, all of New Brunswick; four brothers, Bertin St. Amand and Joe St. Amand, both of Ontario, and Norman St. Amand and Real St. Amand, both of New Brunswick; and numerous sisters-in-laws, brothers-in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, and great-great-nephews. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at St. Andrews Catholic Church, Augusta, with the Rev. William Modlin celebrant.
