SOUTH BRISTOL - Charles Knowlton Hewins Jr., 73, of South Bristol and formerly of Augusta, died at his home on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006.
He was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Sept. 6, 1932, the son of Charles Knowlton Hewins Sr. and Margaret Alice (Powell) Hewins.
Chuck graduated from Cony High School, class of 1950, and went on to receive his degree in business administration from the University of Maine, Orono.
A four-year veteran of the Navy during the Korean War, he was also a member of the Navy Band. He graduated from the Navy School of Music, where he specialized in composition and arrangement.
When he returned home from the war, Chuck joined the family firm, Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, with locations in Augusta and Hallowell, thus becoming the fifth generation of family funeral directors, retiring as owner and operator in 1987. Also, shortly upon his return, he married Alice Sampson.
He was very active in the Odd Fellows, the Rebekahs, the Cecilia Club and the Augusta Symphony Organization, where he participated in the orchestra, wind ensemble and stage bands and also served as treasurer for a time. During this time, it was Don Pauley on the piano, Armand Beaulieu on the bass violin and Charles on percussion, where the vibraphone proved to be his love. It was also around this time that he created the Augusta Symphony Organization's jazz combo.
He was a member of the Green Street United Methodist Church in Augusta, where he sang in the church choir for many years.
He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Gail; and his first wife, Alice.
He was survived by his wife, Frances A. Hewins; a niece and nephew, Lisa Martin of Monroe, and William Bunch of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two grandnieces and a grandnephew, Abigail Martin and Jenna and Tyler Bunch; two cousins, Daniel Hewins of Augusta and Cecilia Miller of southern California; and five stepchildren, William, Jess, Patti, Mike and Matthew.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m on Thursday, Feb. 16, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, where a celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, with the Rev. Susan Winter, celebrant.
A spring interment will be held at Forest Grove Cemetery in Augusta.
