WINTHROP - Charles L. Slonina Sr., 81, of Route 41 died Saturday, Dec.12, 2009, at his home, with family by his side. He was born in Monmouth on Feb. 24, 1928, the son of Jan and Julia (Piela) Slonina. A graduate of Winthrop High School, Charles was a lieutenant in the Army from 1950 to 1953, serving as a translator. He married Corrine Frost in March 1954 and, together, they farmed and raised cattle. While farming, he also was employed with Inmont Corp. and later with Carleton Woolen Mill. In his spare time, he made brooms that he would sell to local stores and mills. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He was predeceased by his wife, Corrine Slonina; a daughter, Melinda Lee Slonina; a sister, Stella Panek; and a brother, Boleslaw 'Brownie' Slonina. Charles is survived by two sons, Charles 'Chuck' Slonina Jr., of Winthrop, and Stephen Slonina and his wife, Sherry, of Augusta; three daughters, Donna Fuller, of Jay, Julia Frost, of Winthrop, and Theresa Scribner, of Chelsea; daughter-in-law Ann Slonina, of Lewiston; two sisters, Stenish Grover and Helen Hanson, both of Winthrop; 10 grandchildren, Tammy Huynh, Chris Huynh, Samantha Slonina, Stephen Slonina Jr., Christopher Slonina, Lynn Ann Uhlman, Jasmine Lee Scribner, Emily Slonina, Charles Slonina Jr., and Abigail Slonina; one great-grandson, Brayden Alexander Huynh; a nephew, Joseph Panek and his wife, Nancy, of Augusta; his best friend, Edward John Munson; also several other nieces and nephews. Visiting will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Church Catholic Church. Spring burial will be in Glenside Cemetery, Winthrop.
