AUGUSTA ? Christine Locke Tobin, 89, of Augusta, died peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation, Greybirch Drive, in Augusta, after several months of declining health. She was born in Augusta on Dec. 24, 1913, the daughter of Walter and Daisy (Brann) Locke. Christine grew up in Augusta and lived there almost all of her life. She was a Cony High School graduate, class of 1931. She married Charles Tobin on Oct. 5, 1941. She and her husband owned Stone Street Market and she also owned and operated her own stenography and accounting business for many years. She continued to do tax work for close friends and relatives, even in her retirement. In her early years, she worked for the Kennebec Journal. As her health declined in recent years, Christine moved out of Augusta and made her home at Hillside Terrace in Hallowell. She served for a time as president of the Resident Council and made many friends among the residents and staff. Christine organized her Cony High School reunions for many years. In retirement, she and her husband traveled extensively in the U.S. and Canada. They were active members of Capitol Area Wheels and Good Sam Club. She was also an active member of Penney Memorial United Baptist Church. She was a supporter of many organizations in the Augusta area, including Old Fort Western. In recent years, she especially enjoyed going for long rides in the car, often to Ocean Point. Mrs. Tobin was predeceased by her husband, Charles in 1991; her sister, Hazel Cunningham; a brother, W. Russell Locke; and her niece, Charlene Rowe. She is survived by a nephew, Robert Rowe and his wife, Mary, of Belgrade; a cousin, Harold Brann and his wife, Dianne, of Palermo; along with several other nieces, nephews and cousins. Relatives and friends may visit from 3-6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, in Augusta. Memorial donations may be made to the Kennebec Valley Humane Society, Pet Haven Lane, Augusta 04330, or Penney Memorial United Baptist Church, 35 Grove St., Augusta 04330, or the charity of choice.
