Obituary

"There is a sign in my grandparents'. barn that reads, "To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow." And for the past 91 years, in one way or another, my G'pee has been planting a garden. G'pee grew up in Massachusetts, to a father who showed criticism perhaps more easily than love, and a mother who loved her children more than words could tell. The combination of those parents resulted in a wise, confident, witty, headstrong and loving man. G'pee lived a storied life complete with daring and adventurous childhood escapades, academic pursuits, service to his country, meeting the love of his life and wife of 64 years at one of the world's largest advertising agencies, raising four brilliant and loving kids, and opening his own advertising agency. He tended his gardens each and every day with the hope of an even better tomorrow. G'pee was a man of many talents, a wordsmith and a photographer, a cook and a sailer, a handyman and a political buff. He could talk to anyone. My favorite skill of his was friendship. Through the years G'pee imparted so much wisdom and care. He guided me through the precarious and petrifying years during and after college. Through tough choices in life and career. He listened and considered. Pondered, played through different scenarios and always gave his best suggestion with room for conversation. We shared the highs and the lows and the in betweens of life. And I am all the better for it. In gardening, as in life, there are countless challenges to solve. G'pee was not one to let a problem get in his way. He puzzled through challenges and delighted in finding solutions. When he lost his vision, it just became one more challenge to solve. He devised systems that allowed him to be as independent as he possibly could. Maintaining his daily exercise and reading, news consumption and, in fair weather, planting, weeding and otherwise tending to his beloved vegetable garden. He was a wonder and an inspiration to everyone who knew him. I have never met anyone with more joy and zest for life. To say that I am heartbroken is an understatement. But to have stood in his glow is a blessing. Rest in peace, Gpee. I love you." -Words by his granddaughter, Maddie Clark. With heartfelt love from his entire family
