Obituary

WINTHROP-Clara "Callie" Edith (Tarr) Lachapelle Fournier died in the early morning hours of January 1, 2024 at Maine General Rehabilitation and Long Term Care at Gray Birch in Augusta, Maine, with family members at her side. She was born in Litchfield, Maine on March 28, 1928, the daughter of Sam Hooker Tarr and Elenora May (Small) Tarr. Callie was a 1946 graduate of Winthrop High School. On November 1, 1947, she married Ronald F. ("Pete") Lachapelle, with whom she had five children. Pete predeceased Callie on October 6, 1988. On July 24, 1998, Callie married Winton P. ("Wimpy") Fournier, who also predeceased her on October 13, 2002. Additionally, Callie was predeceased by her parents, brother William Tarr and sister Constance Norcross, as well as two daughters-in-law, Lorraine Lachapelle and Charlotte Lachapelle. She was employed by Depositors Trust Company (now Key Bank) for most of her working years, retiring in 1990. Callie was a member and Past President of Alfred W. Maxwell Jr. Unit #40, American Legion Auxiliary, of Winthrop, and was a member of the North Manchester Meeting House Church. She loved the Red Sox, the Celtics, and the Patriots, in that order. Survivors include her children: Elenora L. (Fred) Cole, Ronald F. Lachapelle, Jr., Mary E. Lachapelle , John H.(Norma Jeane) Lachapelle, and Carl E. (Dana) LaChapelle; grandchildren Lauren (Nicolas Rosenthal) Cole, Matthew (Rainelle) Cole, Aron Plucinski, Joshua (Erin) Plucinski, Twila (Doug) Curren, Kimberly Anne Castle, Dannielle (Travis) Hartford, Christen (Joshua) Garnett, William LaChapelle and Clara LaChapelle; great grandchildren Nicholas Plucinski, Jane Rosenthal, James Adams, Luke Adams, Kensley Hartford, Savannah Hartford(Tristan Tuttle), Alannah Hartford, Olivia Garnett, Clara Garnett, and Charlotte Cole; great great granddaughter Charlotte Tuttle. Callie is also survived by her identical twin sister, Margaret (Tarr) Yeaton, as well as several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on July 8, 2024 at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin Street in Winthrop, Maine, with a service at 11 A.M.; burial will follow at 1 P.M. at Maine Veterans Cemetery, 129 Blue Star Avenue, Augusta, Maine. Prior to the service, family members will be available starting at 10:00 at the funeral home for those wishing to express their personal condolences. Please visit the Roberts' website to share memories or other comments. The previous words were our mother's, typical of her no-nonsense approach to life and a sign of her generation. We, her children, would add the following: While she did not mention it in her own words, our mother was Valedictorian of her graduating class, as was her mother before her and two generations after her, all of which she was very proud. In a time when there was no such thing as maternity leave, Mum briefly left the work force when she had her children. Although each time she was welcomed back to a job, her vacation and retirement clocks were always reset to those of a new employee. Despite that, at the time of her retirement Mum was a Vice-President at Key Bank. Often, but especially in her retirement, our mother tended out on others by balancing their checkbooks, taking them to doctor's visits, spending time with them at home, in hospitals or nursing homes. She made note of neighbors' birthdays and commemorated many of them with gifts of lobster stew, zucchini bread, and the like; she could be counted upon for cookies at her granddaughters' sports events. In 2017, Mum was given a Spirit of America award in recognition of her outstanding community service to the North Manchester Meeting House Church. In lieu of flowers, we think our mother would like it if you donate money in her name to the house of worship or veterans' organization of your choice. She would also be pleased if you 'pay it forward' by being a caring neighbor in your community, following the life-long example she set. Arrangements are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 62 Bowdoin Street, Winthrop, where memories, condolences and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of our website at www.khrfuneralhomes.com
