AUGUSTA ~ Clarence Freeman Bean, age 92 and known as “Papa” to his grandchildren, peacefully and confidently walked into the arms of his Savior on September 2, 2016 at Togus Hospice facility. He was born to the late Harold and Mabelle Bean in the summer of 1924 in Sidney, Maine. Following High School at Cony in Augusta, Clarence served in the Army Infantry as a radioman. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium, returned to the States for convalescence, and then discharged in 1945. For this, he received the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and, subsequently, the Bronze Star. Clarence married Marguerite Chapman in 1949. He entered the University of Maine, Orono, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was employed by Hudson Paper and then Keyes Fiber (now Huhtamaki) where he specialized in pollution control. Upon retirement, Clarence and Marguerite spent time on the coast and on Great Pond with their children and grandchildren. Clarence was a Professional Engineer, a Land Surveyor, a Mason, a member of the Eastern Star, a Boy Scout leader, an avid fisherman, a golfer, a loving father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by: his son, James Bean; his daughter, Sandra Race and her husband, Ken; his sister, Marion Bean; 8 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends. Clarence was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Marguerite Bean (2009), his sister, Carolyn Uttaro, and his brother, Charles Bean. Clarence’s family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the CMMC (Lewiston) staff and doctors at the T-3 and ICU units and a special thank you to the VA Togus Hospice facility for their loving care. A funeral service will be held at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Relatives and friends may visit with the family from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Interment will follow at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
