Hallowell- Cynthia Hartwig Gyorgy, 96, died peacefully in Hallowell, Maine, on October 6, 2026. She was born September 30, 1930, in Vancouver, British Columbia, a daughter of Fredrik L. and Harriet Skinner Hartwig.
Her father came to America from Bergen, Norway, in 1923. She was proud of her Norwegian roots and went back many times. Through her mother she descended from founders of the 19th-century Oneida Community in upstate New York.
Cindy attended schools in California and New York and graduated from Skidmore College in 1952 with a B.A. in biology. She was class president her freshman and senior years. She stayed close to the college all her life, and class reunions meant a great deal to her.
After college Cindy worked as a research technician at Harvard Medical School, where she met Dr. Tilbert R. M. Gyorgy. They were married in the Oneida Community Mansion House in Kenwood, New York in 1954.
The couple lived in Philadelphia for Tilbert’s surgical residency, followed by a move to Jacksonville, FL, for his Navy service. After the Navy they relocated to Huntington, WV, where he joined the Veterans Administration Hospital. Their sons, Mark and Dean, were born in those years. In 1967 the family moved to Maine, where Dr. Gyorgy was assistant chief of surgery at the Togus V.A. Hospital until his death in 1978. Cindy lived on Lakeview Drive in Readfield for fifty years.
Cindy spent much of her life in service to others. In the 1970s she worked as the volunteer coordinator at Readfield Elementary School, and she taught at Sonshine Nursery School through the 1980s. For many years she also volunteered at Wayne Elementary School.
At Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Augusta she served as a deacon, sang in the choir, and later volunteered with the church's Bridging the Gap outreach. She helped the church start a soup kitchen and shelter, now Bread of Life Ministries, and for decades was its Monday cook. For 28 years she gave her time to Hospice Volunteers of Kennebec Valley. In 1995 United Way of Kennebec Valley honored her with its Norm Temple Community Volunteer Award.
She loved to sing in harmony: with the Sonneteers at Skidmore, with the Bank of Maine Bicentennial Singers in the mid-1970s, and later in life with the women's barbershop group Maine-ly Harmony, which traveled and competed across New England. She also played the cello.
For many years she wintered in Kenwood and summered in Maine. At the Mansion House she became a tour guide and took up weaving on her own loom.
Cindy painted in watercolor and quilted. She loved looking after her grandchildren as they grew. Summers at the lake were full of "Let's go fishing!" and "Shall we make cookies?" Then came the great-grandchildren. "Grammy" visited the kids wherever they were living, and loved planting flowers in their gardens. She also enjoyed some adventurous trips with friends.
In her last years she sorted a lifetime of photographs, passed along family keepsakes and wrote her own notes for this obituary. Writing about the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she added, "And the biggest sorrow: Tilbert missed it all."
Cindy had a gift for friendship, regardless of situation or fortune. She was compelled toward compassion, and those who knew her were better for it.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband and her only sister, Greta Hartwig Sanderson.
Cindy is survived by her sons and their wives, Mark and Denise Gyorgy of Solomons, Maryland, and Dean and Margot Gyorgy of Wayne, Maine; her grandchildren Erik (Kristen), Noah (Carolyn) and Seth, and Emma (Lauren), Matthew and Nina; her great-grandchildren Clara, Luca, Paul and James; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins near and far. She also leaves Diane Ames Gyorgy, mother of Erik, Noah and Seth.
The family is grateful to the staff at Maine Veterans' Homes in Augusta, Granite Hill Estates and Andwell Hospice for their care.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 14, 2026, at Emmanuel Lutheran Episcopal Church, 209 Eastern Avenue, Augusta. Arrangements and guidance are under the direction of Roberts Funeral Home & Cremation Care, 62 Bowdoin Street, Winthrop, ME.
In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be made to Bridging the Gap, 209 Eastern Avenue, Augusta, ME 04330, or at btgaugusta.org.
