Obituary

Mount Vernon – David J. Candage, 79, passed away at home on July 24, 2024, after a lengthy illness, with his daughter by his side. He was the husband of the late Jacqueline "Jackie" (Wood) Candage with whom he shared 33 years of marriage before her death in 1998. David was born on January 26, 1945, in Blue Hill, Maine, the son of the late Bert and Katherine (Howard) Candage. His family moved to Massachusetts when Dave was a toddler where he resided until he moved his wife and children back to Maine in 1976. Years after his wife's death, he moved to Arizona where he spent approximately 20 years before returning home to Maine to be cared for by his daughter and son-in-law. David was in lumber sales for most of his career, beginning at Augusta Lumber, then Sunrise Building Supply, and Hammond Lumber. After retirement, he continued to work part-time for a few years as a security guard at a gated community in Arizona. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and ice fishing, spending time on the boat when he could, watching golf (as he used to play years ago) and watching football games with his family on Sundays. He also became acquainted with "Alexa" and listened to his favorite music often. David is survived by his daughter Christine Candage-Currier and her husband John of Mount Vernon, his 2 sons Raymond Candage of Michigan and Jeffrey Candage of North Carolina, his brothers Rick, Mike, Randy and Kevin, and sisters Mary, Judy and Pam. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Andwell Hospice (previously Androscoggin Home Healthcare & Hospice) for their care in the hours leading up to his death. Also, the caregivers and staff at Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care for the wonderful care he received over the past 2 years. His daughter would also like to express her gratitude to the family members who helped with transportation to and from appointments, bringing Dave dinners and donuts, and checking in on him frequently (John, Kyle, Destiny, Marina, Kylee, and Randy). In honoring David's wishes, there will be no funeral. There will be a celebration of his life at his residence in Mount Vernon on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at noontime. A private burial will take place at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care, 361 Old Belgrade Rd, Augusta, Maine, 04330. Arrangements by Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin Street in Winthrop. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared with the family at the funeral home website www.khrfuneralhomes.com
