Obituary

AUGUSTA - David George Coffin, 65, died Friday, May 15, 2009, of coronary complications at Maine Medical Center in Portland. A resident of Readfield, Mr. Coffin was born in Augusta on Aug. 2, 1943, son of Richard O. and Marion S. Coffin. He was educated in Augusta's Nash, Lincoln, and Buker schools and was a graduate of Cony High School, class of 1963. He was also a 1965 graduate of Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute in South Portland, where he studied marine technology. He served in the Army in Vietnam and for a number of years with the Coast Guard Reserve in Maine. David was employed as an environmental specialist by the state of Maine, Department of Environmental Protection, Water Quality Bureau, until his retirement in 2006. He also enjoyed volunteering for the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad and was a member of the Augusta Elks Lodge. Survivors include two sisters, Mary C. Sturtevant of Winthrop and Carolyn C. Ladd of Augusta; a brother, Richard S. Coffin of The Villages, Fla.; as well as an aunt, several cousins, nieces and nephews. David's family thanks the medical staffs of the critical care units at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta and Maine Medical Center in Portland for the care and kindness they gave to David. Final arrangements are being made by Knowlton Hewins Roberts of Augusta (http://www.khrfuneralhomes.com). A memorial service will be held in June at the convenience of David's family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in David's memory to the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad, P.O.
