WALPOLE- Donald R. Bourgoin passed away on June 13, 2023, at the Maine Veteran's Hospice in Togus, Maine surrounded by loved ones. He resided in Walpole, Maine for the past 28 years, and prior to that in Brunswick, Maine.
He was the youngest child born to Willie and Clara (Fournier) Bourgoin on September 30, 1948, in Brunswick, Maine. He grew up on Paul Street, attended St. John's Catholic School and graduated from Brunswick High School. He also attended some classes at SMCC in the Horticulture program, which sparked a lifelong interest in planting trees and shrubs. He was fortunate to see most of his plants and trees reach full maturity.
Donald worked various jobs prior to being drafted and serving in the Army. He was stationed in Nha Thang, Vietnam during 1969-70. Upon leaving the service, he received an honorable discharge. After coming home, he found employment at the Brunswick Naval Air Station in the public works department as a groundskeeper. After his marriage, he also became involved in buying/selling antiques and going to auctions and flea markets.
On June 24, 1978, he married Karen K. Day in Brunswick and shortly after, their son Jonas was born in Lewiston in 1980. In 1981 they moved to Franklin, N.H. and they operated a greenhouse and flower shop for 9 years. After moving back to Brunswick for a while, they eventually moved to their dream farm in Walpole, Maine. Donald spent a great deal of time fixing up and enhancing the property with plantings, and improvements on the farm.
Donald had numerous interests and was an excellent pool player. He liked astronomy, metal detecting with Jonas, occasional fishing, sci-fi movies, and the music of Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young. Spending time with Jonas was part of each day and they had many adventures together.
During the past few years during his declining health, Jonas provided daily care for his father by cooking, cleaning, and taking him to various appointments. Jonas is to be thanked and admired for all his efforts, patience and compassion, which were exceptional and unselfish.
Donald was predeceased by his parents Willie and Clara (Fournier) Bourgoin, his brother Lucien, and his sisters Aline, Rita, and Nancy. He is survived by his wife Karen Bourgoin, son Jonas Bourgoin and his partner Erin Day of Bremen, step-daughter Carinda Day of Brunswick, his two remaining sisters, Lorraine of Nevada and Louise of Florida, and many nieces and nephews.
In his honor, plant a tree or shrub or eat a lobster.
As per Donald's wishes, there will be no memorial services. Interment will be at the Maine Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Augusta, Maine at a later date.
