AUGUSTA ~ Donald J. Cadwell, 64, formerly of Wayne, died Wednesday July 20, 2016 at his home in Augusta. He was born in Lewiston, March 6, 1952 the son of Richard and Patricia (O’Leary) Cadwell. He was a 1970 graduate of Lewiston High School and a 1975 graduate of the University of Maine with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Management. As a young man, Don achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He was employed by the City of Augusta, first in Community Development and later as the Tax Assessor, retiring after 35 years of service. In his retirement, Don worked for the Town of Winthrop. He lived in Wayne for thirty years and was a member and chairman of the Wayne Planning Board. He was a former member of the Wayne Fire Department and a former member of the Citizens Advisory Board of the Salvation Army in Augusta. He had just recently relocated to Augusta. He enjoyed travelling and hiking and was an avid skier, especially as a “Sugerloafer” Mr. Cadwell was a hard working and compassionate giver, all through his life. He would look for the humor in every situation. Don enjoyed special times with his step-grandson, Jared Carver and will be greatly missed by all his family. Don was predeceased by his wife, Avis Cadwell in 1984. He is survived by his brother, Timothy Cadwell and his wife, Sandra, of Litchfield; his sister, Donna Hanish and her husband, Robert, of Stockton Springs; his nieces, Sara Cadwell and Beth Luce and his nephew, Brian Hanish. All services for Don will be private. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Service, One Church Street, Augusta.
