AUGUSTA ? Donald Joseph Giroux, 77, of Augusta died Sunday, March 2, 2003, at MaineGeneral Medical Center. He was born in Augusta, Dec. 9, 1925, the son of Anatole and Georgiana (Fontaine) Giroux. Donald grew up in the Augusta area and joined the Army in January 1944. He served in the 95th Division and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He spent his 19th birthday in a hospital in England. After the war, he married Louise Staples on June 30, 1947. Mr. Giroux was a retired Augusta firefighter and also worked at Shaw's supermarket, Bates mill and Diamond International. Donald was a life member and former commander of American Legion Post 205 in Augusta, a former 40 & 8 chairman and the safety officer of Augusta Little League. He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. In his spare time, Donald enjoyed hunting, fishing and skiing. Mr. Giroux is survived by his wife of more than 55 years, Louise Giroux; two sons, James Giroux, and Tedd Giroux and his wife, Susan; a sister, Lucille Godbout of Lewiston; brothers Lawrence Giroux and his wife, Jeanette, of Augusta, and Arthur Giroux and his wife, Joan, of Augusta; a step-sister, Ruth Milliken of Camden; and four grandchildren, Kristina, Adam, Bryant and Christopher. Relatives and friends may visit 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be at the new Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
