Obituary

PENOBSCOT -- Donald Miller, 91, formerly of South Belfast Avenue, Augusta, died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at Penobscot Nursing Home. He was born in Vassalboro on July 8, 1920, the son of Ralph and Marion (Small) Miller. Donald graduated from Erskine Academy in 1936. He served with the Navy aboard the U.S.S. St. George during WWII, surviving a Kamikaze hit. He specialized in plotting aviation coordinates, manning machine gun turrets in fighter planes and loading bombs onto aircraft. He served in Guam, Saipan and Okinawa. After the war, he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps fighting forest fires and helping to build parks and dams. Donald worked for 30 years as a surgical aide at the Togus Veterans Hospital. He raised English bulldogs, loved to travel, read poetry and National Geographic and enjoyed stories about Alaska. He also liked doing crossword puzzles. He was a very kind and generous man. He was predeceased by his wife, Inge Miller, and a sister. Donald is survived by two nieces, Mary Ellen Brochu of Kittery and Louise Weymouth of Saco, and a great-niece, Amy Dismore, of Raymond; also his close neighbors in Augusta, Sandra and Norman Cummings. There will be no visiting or services at this time. A graveside service with military honors will be held in Cross Hill Cemetery, Vassalboro in the spring.
