OAKLAND - Doris L. Gilman, 93, passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care at Glenridge, Augusta. Prior to living at Glenridge, Doris had lived on Alpine Street in Oakland for many years. Doris was born in Waterville on July 28, 1914, to Walter P. and Zelle (Davis) Gilman. She attended Waterville schools and graduated from Waterville High School, class of 1932, before going to work at the former Farwell's Fabric Shop on Temple Street. Later, she entered the secretarial field and began her employment at Waterville High School. After 40 years of service, she retired as secretary to the superintendent of School Union 52. In her retirement, Doris continued to seek out seasonal secretarial jobs. She was a lifelong member of the Waterville Universalist Unitarian Church and, as an Oakland resident, attended the All Soul's Universalist Unitarian Church, where she enjoyed attending the Ladies Aid Circle. Doris worked diligently in the organizations that she faithfully attended. She was a life member of the Oakland Order of the Eastern Star, where she obtained the office of Worthy Matron. She also became the Grand Royal Matron in Maine's Amaranth Organization after serving many years as a member and the Royal Matron in the Waterville's Amaranth. Doris learned to knit at a young age and continued to do so in her late years. Through her love of knitting, she graciously supplied the Boys and Girls Club with mittens for many winters. She also enjoyed reading; doing jigsaw, crossword and search-a-word puzzles; and a variety of hand crafts. She was predeceased by her parents and will be missed by cousins and special friends. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16, at All Soul's Universalist Unitarian Church on 41 Church St., Route 11, in Oakland. A graveside service celebrating her life will follow at 3 p.m. at the No. 4 Cemetery on the corner of Route 137 and Route 9 in Albion, with the Rev. Scott Jones officiating. There will be a funeral procession leaving at 2:30 p.m. from the church to the cemetery for those who would like to attend the graveside service but may have difficulty locating the cemetery.
