AUGUSTA - Doris Ware McAllister, a life-long resident of Augusta, died Friday April 25, 2008, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care, Glenridge Drive in Augusta. She was born in Augusta, the daughter of Orrin and Beulah (Ware) McAllister. She was a graduate of Cony High School, the salutatorian of her class. She received an A.B. degree from Bates College and a M.Ed. degree from the University of Maine, Orono. She had also studied at Columbia University and various other colleges. She taught English at Cony and eventually became head of the English Department. During her teaching years, she was an active member of English organizations in Maine and New England. She was a past president of the Augusta Teachers Association, a past recording secretary of the Augusta College Club, a past corresponding secretary of the Zonta Club of Augusta, a past trustee and secretary of the Board of Trustees of the Lithgow Library Association. She was a past president of the Gamma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and past co-editor of the Mainspring of Alpha Psi State. Doris was a member of the Penney Memorial United Baptist Church, the Bates College Key, a society honoring Bates graduates, the Women's Legislative Council, the Augusta Nature Club, the Koussinoc Chapter of the D.A.R., the St. Andrew's Society, the Maine State Historical Society, the Maine Genealogical Society, the Maine Archaeological Society, the Friends of Fort Western, the R.B. Capen Rebekah Lodge of the I.O.O.F., the Rose of Sharon Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, the American Association of University Women, the Kennebec and Maine Retired Teachers Association, the Maine Association of Retirees, the National Education Association, the Maine Old Cemetery Association, and the Augusta-Hallowell Customer Advisory Council. Doris was predeceased by her sisters, Muriel A. McAllister and Leah M. Cline. She is survived by a nephew, grand-nieces, a grand-nephew and several cousins. As per Doris's wishes, there will be no services. She will be buried at the Riverside Cemetery in Augusta.
