Obituary

WINTHROP - Our beloved Mimi, Dorothy Marguerite (Lewia) Belanger Smith, joined the angels Sunday, July 10, 2022. During her last few days, she was surrounded by family and friends. She was born in Hallowell, Maine on August 16, 1924 and was the third child of Raymond and Gertrude (Gilchrest) Lewia. She graduated from Winthrop High School in 1942. She went on to teach at the old school house in North Monmouth and for many years at a special needs school in Hallowell. On November 22, 1945 she married Lucien (Bumpie) A. Belanger and they had three children, daughters Sandra (St. Hilaire) and Cheryl (Trow), and a son Billy. Dorothy spent most of her life in the Winthrop and Wayne areas. She and Bump owned Belangers' Bakery in Winthrop and were known for their donuts, wedding cakes, and making the best Bismarcks around. After their bakery days, the Belangers managed E.M. Loews Drive-In Theatre for many years in Manchester where she had the chance to meet Clint Eastwood. She enjoyed traveling and her favorite place to visit was Wells Beach where she spent many summers vacationing with her family and friends. She accompanied her beloved husband for many years to the Lewiston Dialysis Center where she met and became very dear friends with "her dialysis family". After Bump passed away, she remained close to her dialysis family, including John Smith of Wayne. She and John traveled around the country after his own spouse had passed and the two had a daily routine of going out for coffee. She and John wed shortly before he passed away. After John died, she moved back to her home and enjoyed all of her little great (and great-great) grandchildren when they came over for play dates. She recently had a brief illness and was admitted to the Augusta Center for Health and Rehabilitation where she passed. She was pre-deceased by her parents, sister Estelle Swift and husband Russell, sister Ruth Perry and husband Buster, brother Robert Lewia and sister-in law Esther, husbands Lucien and John, and son Billy. She was also pre-deceased by dialysis family members Bill Maxim and Betty Tikander. She is survived by her two daughters Sandy St. Hilaire and husband David of Winthrop and Cheryl Trow and husband Dan of Augusta. She is also survived by her six grandchildren Debbie (St. Hilaire) Burgess and husband Kevin, Dave St. Hilaire and wife Jenn, and Dan St. Hilaire, all of Winthrop, Mike Trow, Norman Trow and wife Lora, and Matt Trow and wife Amanda, all of Augusta. There are also 13 great grandchildren surviving her Renee St. Hilaire of Saco, Ashley (Burgess) Rodriguez and husband Mitsael of Great Falls, Montana, Dave St. Hilaire of Winthrop, Josh Dubois and wife Kristin of Manchester, Nikki (Burgess) Curtis and husband Alex of Winthrop, Shari (Trow) Edwards and husband Kevin of Gardiner, Katy Trow of Hampden, Luke St. Hilaire of Winthrop, and Kayla and Abby Trow, Tucker Brown Taya and Nolan Trow, all of Augusta. She is also survived by six great-great grandchildren Jace and Amelia Rodriguez of Great Falls, Montana, Johnse St. Hilaire of Winthrop, Ethan Dubois of Manchester, Chloe and Logan Edwards of Gardiner, many nieces and nephews, and friends Dick Doherty of Rumford and Jean Kinney of Winthrop. Her family wishes to thank Central Maine Medical Center, Beacon Hospice, the Augusta Center for Health and Rehabilitation, and Life Flight of Maine for their wonderful care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Schwachman-Diamond Syndrome Foundation (https://shwachman-diamond.org/).
