Dorothy Irish Obituary (2003)

EAST WINTHROP ?Dorothy C. Irish, 95, of Case Road died Thursday, July 24, 2003, at Nicholson's Longterm Care and Rehabilitation Center in Winthrop. She was born in Worcester, Mass., on Sept. 9, 1907, the daughter of George and Edith (Kilbreth) Smith, and spent her early years at her grandmother's home in East Winthrop. She was a 1924 graduate of Skowhegan High School. During World War II, she found employment with the OPA, and later transferred to the Internal Revenue Service in Augusta, where she worked for 26 years until retirement. She married Roman White in 1925 and after his death she married Emerson Irish in 1948. She passionately loved her home in East Winthrop. Her long life in the area made her a source of historical information of interest to many local historians. Prior to her being confined to her home in later years, she was an active member of the East Winthrop Baptist Church, where she served as schoolteacher, clerk, historian and flower committee member. She was a member of the Loyal Daughters Church Club, East Winthrop Thursday Club and State Federation of Women's Club; and a former member of Winthrop Business and Professional Woman's Club and Winthrop Woman Day Extension. She served a five-year term on the Winthrop Conservation Committee and served on the state board of the American Baptist Churches of Maine. Dorothy was also a member of the Winthrop Grange, the Cecilia Club of Augusta, Friends of Fort Western and Winthrop Senior Citizens. She is survived by her son, Roman Alden White of Buxton; two granddaughters, Nancy Rodgers of Columbus, Ohio, and Dorothy White of Boring, Ore.; and a great-grandson, Joshua Rodgers of Blacklick, Ohio. There will be no visiting at this time. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, July 28, at East Winthrop Cemetery. The Rev. Mike Panosian will officiate. A memorial service enabling her family and friends to celebrate her life will be held at a later date and time to be announced.
