Obituary

AUGUSTA ? Douglas W. Hardy, 87, of Augusta, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation in Augusta. He was born in Weld, Feb. 2, 1915, the son of Ronald and Theo (Collins) Hardy. Douglas attended Wilton Academy. He married Hazel (Holman) Hardy on Dec. 14, 1935. He worked for many years at Bass Shoe in Wilton and then later at Douglas Aircraft in California. During World War II he attended bomb disposal school in Aberdeen, Md., after which he was sent to Iran and Egypt. After the war, he managed Har-Co Sporting Goods in Augusta. When the store closed, he went to work for the Maine Liquor Commission, working as a store manager in both Wilton and Farmington until his retirement. In his spare time, Douglas enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing, gardening and talking to people. Mr. Hardy was predeceased by his wife, Hazel, in 2000. He is survived by two sons, Spencer Hardy and his wife, Barbetta, of Westbrook, and Malcolm Hardy and his wife, Frances, of Greene; five grandchildren, Thomas, Joshua, Andrew and Kimble Hardy, and Karin Kelley; one stepgrandson, Aaron Stasulis; and one great-grandchild, Kasey Kelley. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery in Belgrade. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, Augusta.
