Dr. Julius Eugene Ciembroniewicz Obituary (1929

WINTHROP ~ Dr. Julius Eugene Ciembroniewicz, 88, longtime resident of Winthrop and recently retired neurosurgeon, passed away peacefully at home on March 18, in the company of his family. Julius was born in Katowice, Poland and graduated from Krakow’s Jagiellonian University Medical College in 1955. The recipient of a Rockefeller Foundation grant for promising European neurosurgeons, at age 31 he traveled to England where he practiced medicine at the Walton Hospital in Liverpool before emigrating to the United States. Over the course of his career, Julius practiced surgical medicine at Boston University, taught at the Harvard School of Medicine, was a resident at Boston City Hospital’s Lahey Clinic, and worked as a researcher at the Indiana University School of Medicine on grants from the National Institute of Health and the National Cancer Institute. He moved to Maine with his family in 1967. In Maine, Julius practiced medicine at Kennebec Valley Medical Center and later MaineGeneral Medical Center, serving as Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery for many years. Julius pursued numerous hobbies and philanthropic interests outside of his medical career, and he was an avid fisherman. He was also a passionate advocate combating prejudice and discrimination and was a founding member of the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine. Julius was predeceased by his brother, Vladek, and son, Gregory. He is survived by his wife, Sheila; son, Stephen and his wife, Deb, and their two children Joseph and Camila; son, Julius and his fianc Elisa; and son, Laurence. A private service will be held.
