MANCHESTER ? Earle W. Eldredge, Jr., 86, of Manchester, died Wednesday December 15, 2010 at the Androscoggin Hospice House, Auburn. He was born in Rumford, December 22, 1923 but, moved to Hallowell and graduated from Hallowell High School. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served during World War II in both the Atlantic and Pacific. He was discharged in 1946. Earle worked for Westinghouse for 38 years. Upon his retirement, he went to work for the City of Augusta as a crossing guard for another 20 years. He took great care of the children at his crossing. Mr. Eldredge coached Little League Baseball and was part of the 1951 championship team. He was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame October 10, 2004. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and attended church regularly until his recent illness. Earle enjoyed walking, working in his yard and garden and was very fond of the Old Hallowell Days Parade. He was an avid sports fan and loved to make a friendly wager on the Patriots or Red Sox. Earle was predeceased by his first wife, Joanne Eldredge and his brother, Harry Eldredge. He is survived by his wife, Leona Eldredge; a daughter, Darlene Beaulieu and her fianc?, Alan Corbus, of Manchester; a brother, Vernon Eldredge, of New Gloucester; two sisters, Phyllis Ricchio, of Portland and Shirley Robertson, of Alaska; two grandchildren, Corey Beaulieu and Erica Dupont, and one great-granddaughter, Alexis Hogy. A committal service will be held in the Chapel of the Old Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive in Augusta, Tuesday December 21 at 1 p.m. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church Street, Augusta.
