READFIELD - Edna C. Guerra, 78, of Thunder Castle Road, died at home from cancer on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006, surrounded by her family. Edna was born March 8, 1927, in New York City, to Arthur and Matilda Edwards. She was raised and attended schools in East Rutherford, N.J. She received the Board of Education's award for highest average in the graduating class of East Rutherford High School. She joined the Cadet Nurse Corps Service and graduated from the Jersey City Hospital Nursing School in 1947. Edna enjoyed bowling with her team in the church league. She played the B-flat saxophone in her high school band. Moving to Maine in 1971, she was eager to master downhill skiing. After raising her family, she resumed her nursing career in the skilled unit of the Williams Nursing Home Facility. She volunteered her time at the Well Baby Clinic in Winthrop. She enjoyed her gardening until the deer won over her territory. Still, she continued to attend and cultivate her blueberry patch. In 1982, she was struck by a car, resulting in severe injuries. With much courage and perseverance, she overcame many of her handicaps sufficiently, to resume her household duties. She continued to enjoy cross-country skiing on her land. While her ability to travel was limited, she and her daughter, Mary, went on a pilgrimage with a church group to Rome. There, they had an audience with Pope John Paul II and witnessed the canonization of St. Eugene. She also assisted the late veterinarian Barry Fossett, of the Companion Animal Clinic, with a program bringing dogs and cats on visits to nursing home patients. With the help of her family and her dearest friends, Edna bravely regained much of her life following her tragic accident. She was predeceased by her parents; a sister, Beatrice LaGreca; and an infant daughter, Judith Anne. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Wilfred Guerra, M.D., and their five children, William, Michael, Mary, James and John; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; her twin sister, Florence O'Donnell; and brother Arthur Edwards. There will be no visiting at this time. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, at St. Francis Xavier Church, Winthrop, with the Rev. Brian Blanchette, celebrant. Burial will be in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to HealthReach Hospice, 150 Dresden Ave., Gardiner, ME 04345; or to a charity of your choice.
