Obituary

AUGUSTA - Elaine E. 'Lainey' Buck, 84, of Cony Road died Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at the Maine Veterans' Home, Augusta. She was born in Brewer on March 2, 1924, the daughter of Guy and Olive (Kendall) Ingalls. She graduated from LaGrange School and Beals Business College, and later served in the Navy (W.A.V.E.S.) during World War II. Elaine had worked for the state Department of Human Services for 25 years until her retirement in 1986. She had an excellent voice and enjoyed singing. She was in the Navy Choir and sang at Carnegie Hall. She enjoyed watching old movies and spending time with her grandchildren. Elaine was a member of Penney Memorial United Baptist Church in Augusta. She is survived by three sons, Kenneth Buck and his wife, Gayle, of West Rutland, Vt., Kendall Buck and his wife, Phyllis, of Pittston, and Hollis Buck, of Randolph; a daughter, Cathy Chesley and her husband, Brent, of Randolph; seven grandchildren, Karen, Neil, Michael, Aaron, Kelley, Trevor and Jeremy; nine stepgrandchildren, Ron, Kendra, Jenna, Angela, Martin, Steven, David, Jodi and Arik; 11 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by her many friends and 'family' who took care of her for the 21 years while at the Maine Veterans' Home, where she was the longest residing female veteran. Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at Penney Memorial United Baptist Church. Burial with military honors will be held in the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. www.khrfuneralhomes.com
