HALLOWELL- Eleanor Louise Fuller, 90, an area teacher for almost half a century, passed away Monday, April 16, 2007 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, surrounded by her sons and their families, after a short period of ill health. She was born in Brewer on November 21, 1916, a daughter of Percy Ray Bissell and Alta Baker-Bissell, the second of two children. Her father, Percy, and her brother, Gordon Bissell, predeceased her early in life. Her mother, Alta, remarried Kelly E. Crosskill and Eleanor?s two sisters, Arnie (Crosskill) Merrithew and Estelle (Crosskill) Rossetti were born. She was devoted to her two sisters. Eleanor graduated from Bangor High School where she excelled in dramatics and public speaking for which she received numerous awards and honors. She attended and graduated from Husson College in Bangor where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Education and Secretarial Science and a State of Maine Teaching Certificate. After graduation, Eleanor accepted a position teaching Business Education in Hallowell, where she lovingly taught area students at Hallowell High School and later Hall-Dale High School for the next 32 years. At the high school she coached school plays, was an advisor to the National Honor Society and the school yearbook, ?The Venture?. She also chaperoned many class trips to Washington, D.C. and New York City. She was also employed by the State of Maine, Department of Education, Office of the Commissioner during a brief leave of absence from her life long teaching career. Upon retirement from teaching public school in 1977, she spent another decade teaching Adult Education in Gardiner. Some of her students, who are now adults, continued to stay in touch with her throughout her life. In Hallowell, she met the love of her life, John W. Fuller, with whom she spent over 50 years in happy marriage. Eleanor and John had a wonderful life together, raising two sons, Jack and Gordon, traveling, and enjoying friends and relatives at their home on Mayflower Road in Hallowell and their summer cottage in Northport (Bayside), Maine. She loved her summer community in Bayside. She was a third generation ?Baysider? who began her Bayside experience at her grandmother?s cottage and continued it later at her mother?s cottage and then at her own. As a younger woman in Bayside, Eleanor coordinated youth group activities including dramatics and later in life became an active member and supporter of the Northport Yacht Club and the Bayside Historical Preservation Society. She also loved the game of Bridge, played it well, and enjoyed socializing with ?the girls? at her ?Bridge Clubs?. Eleanor was a member of the Hallowell Current Events Club, served as Board of Trustee for the Hubbard Free Library and volunteered at MaineGeneral Medical Center. She was also a lifelong communicant of St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Hallowell. Eleanor was predeceased by her husband, John, her brother, Gordon, and her sister, Arnie. She is survived by her sister, Estelle (Crosskill) Rossetti & her husband, John, of Toronto, Canada. She is also survived by her two sons, Jack Fuller & his life partner, Carol Porter, and Gordon Bissell Fuller & his fianc?, Kathy Crowley, both of Hallowell; her grandchildren, Shana (Fuller) Boynton of South China, John W. Fuller II of Windsor, Jocelyn Dean of Portland, OR, Amanda Porter of Augusta, and Jared P. Fuller of Ventura, CA; and her great grandchildren, Samantha Vintinner, Kasey Boynton and Haley Fuller. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff of the Maine Veteran?s Home in Augusta, Dr. Henderson and his partners and the staff of MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta for their individualized and compassionate services to Eleanor and those who loved her. As Eleanor wished, there will be no viewing or funeral services. The family is hosting a celebration of Eleanor?s life at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 4th at St. Matthew?s Episcopal Church on Union Street in Hallowell. Burial will be later in the spring at Hallowell Cemetery.
