Elenor
Glew
May 10, 1912 — Feb 7, 2010
AUGUSTA - Elenor Frances Dean Glew, 97, passed away on Feb. 7, 2010. Formerly of Kling Street in Augusta, Elenor was born May 10, 1912, in Chicopee Falls, Mass., the second daughter of Susan Jackson and Milton O. Dean. The family moved to Augusta in 1919 when Mr. Dean became manager of the Edwards Division of the Bates Manufacturing Company. They joined South Parish Congregational Church, where she remained active until 2007. Elenor was raised in Augusta and graduated from Augusta schools. She attended Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., and worked in the office at Edwards Textile Mill, where she met Leland Glew. The family had a great love for the outdoors and all things in nature that they passed on to the following generations. Elenor and Leland were married May 23, 1936, and had two daughters, Robyn and Merry. Except for a few years in Portland, they remained in Augusta. Elenor worked as bookkeeper for Leland's business, Martin & Glew, until 1977, when she retired. Elenor and Leland were very active in church, community and business affiliations -- The Five C's, Augusta Country Club, Deacons in the Church, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts among others. They enjoyed golfing and family drives and picnics all over New England and beyond. In 1970, they bought a camp on China Lake and enjoyed many summers there. After Leland passed away in 1986, Elenor remained active in Altrusa, the Augusta Garden Club and many church activities. She remained independent and often traveled to visit her family in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and New York, and later to Iowa and Georgia. In 2001, Elenor chose to move into St Mark's Home, where she lived for a year before she moved to Captain Lewis Residence in Farmingdale. Christine Kipp and her husband, Dr. H. Winston Kipp, Elenor's nephew, were a tremendous help to Elenor when both Robyn and Merry moved out of New England. Thanks to the generosity of another church member, Joanne Winchenbach, Elenor was able to attend church almost every Sunday until Easter 2007. Because of her fierce independence and a new riverside trail, Elenor was able to walk a mile practically every day, rain or shine, until health issues forced her to slow down. She was predeceased by her husband, Leland; her parents, Susan and Milton Dean; her sisters, Priscilla (John) Leininger and Estelle (Harold) Kipp; brother-in-law Bruce Fessenden; and cousin Roger (Rose) Jackson, who was raised with the Dean sisters. She is survived by one sister, Susan Fessenden, of Topsham; daughters Robyn (Don) Hensley, of Edgewater, Fla., and Merry (Lou) Nay, of New Harmony, Utah; three grandchildren, Susann Hensley, Ronald Hensley and Tracy Tjarks; two great-grandchildren, Rachel and Hanah Tjarks; as well as several nephews and one niece. She also is survived by the wonderful staff at The Captain Lewis Residence who cared for and loved her for the past several years -- and, for that, we thank them. We also wish to thank the staff of Glenridge nursing home who took such good care of Elenor the past four months. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Condolences to the family may be sent to www.khrfuneralhomes.com. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, ME 04330.
